The Toledo Area Humane Society is a charitable 501(c) 3 animal welfare organization and is one of the oldest organizations in the U.S., caring for more than 4,000 animals each year.

Mission: Our mission is to lead the community in efforts focused on relieving the suffering of, preventing cruelty to, and providing for humane treatment of animals.

  • Is a private, nonprofit organization serving the animals and people of the Toledo area and beyond since 1884
  • Is the state's oldest animal welfare organization
  • Receives no government funding and is not a United Way agency
  • Receives no funding from, and is not affiliated with, any national humane organizations
  • Responds and investigates over 2,000 animal cruelty reports every year.
  • Depends on the generosity of individual and corporate supporters to fund our programs and services.

Meet the TAHS Staff!

Purpose: Toledo Area Humane Society believes in improving the quality of life for the animals and people in our community.

Vision: To create an educated, caring and responsible community free of animal abuse and neglect. The Toledo Area Humane Society is committed to the welfare of animals and to promoting a healthy bond between animals and their human companions. We shall:

  • Provide temporary shelter and care for animals while seeking permanent homes
  • Advocate for animals...speaking for those who cannot speak for themselves
  • Intervene and prevent cruelty to animals
  • Educate the community regarding animal issues, responsible care and training and the correlation between animal cruelty and human abuse

Philosophy: At TAHS we believe:

  • In an open door policy where no animal at risk for abuse, neglect or abandonment is turned away.
  • Every adoption at TAHS is unique and special. It is our goal to match suitable pets to appropriate forever homes.
  • In leading efforts in our community to reduce pet overpopulation by continuing to spay and neuter every adopted animal.
  • We have a responsibility to provide leadership in passing legislation to protect animals.
  • Acts of cruelty, neglect and abandonment should be investigated and the quality of life of animals improved through education or legal intervention
